One Soul at a Time: The Church Brings Hope in Kisumu
Residing within a challenging slum of Kisumu, Kenya, Baraka and his family, alongside the Mission Assistance team, dedicate their service. Alongside his wife, Baraka leads a local church, which over time, has turned into a source of optimism for countless individuals.
The church, a fruit of support for the ministry through IMOCE, took root precisely where its presence was most required. Today, it acts as a catalyst for life transformation, not through human endeavor, but by means of divine grace and the strength of the Gospel.
Baraka’s ministry serves approximately 700 individuals weekly via Sunday services, alongside specialized ministries catering to diverse age groups, encompassing children to grandparents. Many individuals have embraced Christianity. Numerous have experienced liberation from generational curses, traditions rooted in idol worship, and the grasp of poverty. Through the exposition of Scripture, people are cultivating faith in God and are basing their lives on His truth.
Over the past few weeks, Baraka conducted home visits, including a remarkable visit with an elderly gentleman who cycles over 10 miles every Sunday to be part of the worship. “His devotion touches me,” shared Baraka. “He is always present for the service.”
Last week, the church also held its initial meeting for married pairs—a key development for the community. In many locales in Kenya, marriages often remain unofficial, largely bound by custom. The ministry is currently driving encouragement for couples to formalize their marriages, shape families grounded in Biblical values, and reflect Christ’s love in their domestic lives.
An integral part of the ministry also involves a daily feeding program. Approximately 140 individuals, comprising abandoned elders, single mothers, and orphaned children, are provided a warm meal each evening. For many, this stands as their sole meal for the day. Baraka expressed gratitude: “We extend our sincere thanks to everyone supporting this initiative. Through this basic deed, you extend dignity, hope, and life to those who would be bereft of these.”
In the unfolding narrative—one life at a time—God is orchestrating transformations of hearts. The community evolves. Families are discovering fresh meaning. The illumination of Christ is shining brightly in locations that were once steeped in despondency.
Baraka and his team communicate this message to everyone contributing:
“We are immensely thankful for your presence in this journey. Thank you for your support and prayers, which help turn miracles into reality. May God abundantly bless you.”
