Young Hearts, Deep Questions: Youth Ministry in Kisumu
In Kisumu, Kenya, the team of Mission Assistance missionaries continues to walk alongside young people, helping them discover their identity in Jesus. These weeks have been especially meaningful, as the youth began opening their hearts to conversations about authority, trust, and God’s character.
During one gathering, the leaders asked the teens to reflect on how they see authority figures — parents, teachers, police, pastors. Many shared painful stories, as harsh discipline and corruption often shape daily life. “Sometimes our past experiences affect how we see God,” Sasha explained. “If authority around us is unjust or unkind, we might struggle to believe that God is truly good.” Together, they searched the Scriptures for the truth of who God is — a Father who loves, a Judge who is just, a Teacher who is patient.
The ministry also takes creative forms. The youth enjoyed a sermon video, a rare experience for many who don’t own phones or have access to online resources. Through this, they could hear the Word in a fresh way and discuss how to counter the “strongholds” of false beliefs with God’s promises.
Beyond teaching, the team serves practically. The youth recently spent three hours handwashing a large pile of clothes for families in need. One home belonged to a woman battling cervical cancer. Another visit brought them to Michelle, a 20-year-old who recently joined the church. Sasha shares: “My goal is to lead her to repentance, but even more, for her to encounter Jesus personally. She is searching, and we are meeting regularly to walk with her.”
The follow-up with David, a young man with a serious leg infection, brings hope. His infection is now gone, and the wound is healing well. Once recovery is complete, the team plans to help him receive a prosthetic.
Meanwhile, Sasha has been interviewing preteens preparing for water baptism. Though this is not usually her area of ministry, the joy is unmistakable: “I’m so pleasantly surprised at the work Jesus is doing with them. It is exciting to see this new generation growing in faith!”
None of this would be possible without the prayers and generosity of those who stand with the missionaries. Thanks to supporters of Mission Assistance and IMOCE, the young people of Kisumu are hearing the Gospel, experiencing discipleship, and witnessing God’s love in action.
🙏 Thank you for partnering in this journey. Your faithfulness is shaping a new generation in Kenya — and lives are being transformed for eternity.
