Serving in Kenya: Finances, Translations, and Evangelism in Dunga Beach Slums
“I serve in the slums of Dunga Beach in Kisumu, Kenya, at Mission Assistance,” says missionary Sasha Syskova. Her ministry covers a broad range of responsibilities, from managing finances to translation and evangelism.
“Since our mission base is primarily Slavic, I often translate from Russian to English and vice versa. This is essential not only for teaching the Word but even during our daily breakfast meetings with the missionaries. When guests from different European countries visit, speaking Russian or Ukrainian, I help facilitate communication.”
In addition to translation, Sasha is also responsible for the mission’s finances. She manages all income and expenses, allocates funds across various projects, and ensures salaries are paid.
“Over the past few weeks, I have distributed salaries to all workers, managed financial support for social projects, covered additional expenses such as water, electricity, and transportation, and regulated grocery shopping for the mission, orphanage, and feeding programs,” she shares.
Sasha is also deeply involved in youth ministry and evangelism. One of the most recent events was a meeting with guests from Poland, who serve at Salvation Church.
“They ministered to the boys, while two other women and I shared testimonies and engaged in a Q&A session with them. We also visited a juvenile detention center, where many street children reside, and had the opportunity to share the Gospel. My favorite part is always the personal one-on-one talks and prayers after the message.”
Another significant aspect of the ministry is the “prayer walks” conducted by students of the Year for God Bible school.
“We pair up in twos or threes and walk around the village, stopping people and asking if we can pray for them. Even though it may seem simple, this is where I see the most fruit and God’s power at work. Each time, the groups return with powerful testimonies of people who were in desperate need of a touch from God that day. We try to follow up by collecting their contact information and inviting them to church.”
At the end of her report, Sasha expressed her heartfelt gratitude to those who support the mission:
“The biggest thank you to you! Thank you so much for your financial support. It is incredibly important and so valued. Without you, we would not be able to do God’s work here! Thank you for trusting me. I pray that in your ministries, families, and personal lives, God’s grace, strength, and will increase.”
