Education in the Turkana Desert: Challenges and Progress
Education in the Turkana Desert continues to grow thanks to the joint efforts of the local community and the support of generous donors. The number of students is increasing: Victoria School now has 435 children, while the new school accommodates 68 students.
However, a lack of classrooms remains a major challenge. “Many children are forced to study outdoors, under the trees,” the missionaries report. To improve the learning environment, the local community is working on building a teachers’ house for the new school.
“Our teachers travel from Lodwar every Monday and return to their families on Friday. They need a place to stay during the week,” explain the project organizers.
Parents are also actively involved in supporting the school’s development. A parent committee meeting was recently held to discuss urgent needs and possible solutions.
Another significant issue is meal preparation. Due to strong winds, cooking over an open fire has become nearly impossible, but the cooks have found an alternative solution.
At the same time, only 363 children currently receive support, while the total number of students is 503.
“We are looking for those willing to help provide for every child, as education is the key to transforming the lives of these children and their families,” the missionaries emphasize.
Despite all the challenges, the team continues to work tirelessly to ensure that children have access to knowledge that can change their future.
“Thank you for your prayers and support!”
