A Light in the Slums: Pastor Baraka’s Ministry Update from Kisumu, Kenya
Report from a local pastor serving with the Assistance Mission
Warm greetings in Christ.
My name is Baraka, and together with my family, I serve as a pastor in one of the slum villages of Kisumu, Kenya, through the Assistance Mission. For the past two and a half years, our local church has stood as a lighthouse in the community — a place where broken stories are met with love, prayer, and hope.
We’ve witnessed miracles. Lives changed. Hearts restored.
All of this, we believe, is the fruit of God’s grace — and the faithful partnership of those who stand with us through IMOCE. Thank you for every prayer, every word of encouragement, and every gift that has kept us going. You are part of this testimony.
A Growing Church, A Growing Mission
Today, our adult congregation includes around 250 people each Sunday.
Our children’s ministry reaches about 300 kids, preteens — 180, teens — 80, and youth ministry — another 80 young people.
Through these ministries, we are reaching every generation — sharing God’s Word, building relationships, and discipling hearts.
Last Sunday, we hosted a belated Mother’s Day celebration in church.
Each mother received a rose, a meal, and a message of blessing — a reminder that even if their pasts were filled with loss, God’s love is unchanging.
Most of these women come from deep poverty, broken families, or abandonment.
But on that day, they were seen, honoured, and reminded of Jesus — the true and constant Love.
We also held our monthly women’s fellowship, where women of all ages come together for discipleship and encouragement.
Many are single mothers, carrying the weight of both spiritual and physical survival.
Through these gatherings, they are strengthened in faith, taught the Word, and reminded they are not alone.
Reaching the Forgotten, One Life at a Time
This week, I visited a young woman from our youth ministry who also serves in our children’s and teen programs.
She lives with her family in a small, mud-walled hut not far from church. She hasn’t been in school for three weeks.
Her mother, unable to find a stable job, simply cannot afford tuition.
We prayed together — trusting that God will make a way.
Prayer, Food, and the Power of the Gospel
Every Friday evening, we gather as a church to pray.
We pray for our nation. We pray for our mission. We pray for all of you — our partners in this Kingdom work.
Thanks to the support provided through IMOCE, we’re also able to run a daily feeding program.
Each evening, around 140 people receive a warm meal.
Among them are orphans, single mothers, grandparents, and others from the surrounding slum community.
They no longer go to bed hungry.
And in that meal, they receive more than food — they receive Christ.
With Grateful Hearts
From the bottom of our hearts — thank you.
Thank you for empowering our family, for building our church, for feeding the hungry, and for standing with us in so many ways.
May the Lord richly bless you.
May He multiply your kindness.
And may His name be glorified through every life touched.
Together, we serve. Together, we bring hope.
